Arrive in Zurich, Switzerland. Take an escorted tour across the Austrian border and into the Tyrolean alps for dinner at the hotel. Then see the Bavarian Alps and Linderhof Palace for a guided visit, and a stop to see the local woodcraftsmen. In Munich, we will see the Glockenspiel midieval tournament and dance, the Residenze, National Theatre, Karolinenplatz with the Obelish, the Köningsplatz, and many scenic towers. And we’ll be sure to celebrate Oktoberfest with many beer and festival tents. We’ll then proceed to Italy, to see Piazza Walther and an outdoor market and the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology containing the 5,000 year old “Iceman.” The trip then circles back to Salzburg, birthplace of Mozart, Hellbrunn Palace containing the famous gazebo and St. Peter’s Abbey, both seen in The Sound of Music; Mirabell Palacce and the Mozart Conservatoire, 15th century Altes Rathaus, Collegiate Church and the Franciscan Church, Residence Square, and Salzburg Cathedral. The next day we’ll see the parade and festivities of the Almabtrieb, followed by a day in the Austrian Alps and a cable car ride. We’ll conclude our trip in Innsbruck to see the capital, Old Town, Rococo Wilten Basilica, shopping, Rattenberg, and crystal and other crafts. Our flight lands in Rome, from which we will drive the countryside to Sorrento, with its 17th-18th century architecture, and past identity as Pompeii. We’ll explore the ancient city, once covered in ash from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Next is a stop at the Isle of Capri, for boutiques, views, museums, the Faraglioni Rocks, Piazzetta Umberto, and Marina Grande. We’ll then voyage to the famed Almafi Coast, including the town of Ravello, the once host of figures such as Wagner, Greta Garbo, Winston Churchill, and the Kennedys. Then it’s on to Positano with its terraced hills, and Amalfi, a romantic town on the Gulf of Salerno, followed by a tour the Benedictine Abbey of Montecassino founded in 529. Then it’s on to Rome to see the Capitoline Hill, Colosseum, Trevi Fountin, and the Pantheon. You’ll also have the option to visit Florence or stroll Rome’s Via Veneto. There will be plenty of opportunity to visit the many shops and cafes for a cappuccino. We will conclude our trip with a visit to the Vatican to see the Tapestry Gallery, Map Gallery, Raphael Rooms, Sistine Chapel, Vatican Library Hall, St. Peter’s Basilica and La Pieta, and the Canopy over the High Altar.
